Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an autism assessment and an ADHD assessment?

  • An autism assessment focuses on understanding social communication, flexibility of thinking, sensory processing, and patterns of behaviour. An ADHD assessment focuses on attention, concentration, activity levels, and impulse control. Many people benefit from a combined assessment, as autism and ADHD can overlap.

Can you assess for autism and ADHD at the same time?

  • Yes. We offer combined assessments, which are often recommended when traits of both conditions are present. This ensures you receive a clear, joined-up understanding without duplication of appointments.

What’s the difference between a private assessment and an NHS/HSE one?

  • Private assessments generally have shorter waiting times and allow you to begin the process sooner. We also provide detailed reports with recommendations for ongoing support, which are widely accepted by schools, workplaces, and healthcare professionals.

Do you assess for conditions other than autism and ADHD?

  • While our primary focus is autism and ADHD, our clinicians are trained to consider related conditions (such as dyspraxia, dyslexia, or anxiety) and signpost you to appropriate services where needed.

Booking & Process

How do I know which assessment is right for me or my child?

  • We offer a preliminary screening questionnaire and a free 15-minute consultation to help you decide whether an autism, ADHD, or combined assessment is most appropriate.

Do you offer online assessments as well as in-person ones?

  • Yes. For adults, assessments can be completed online where appropriate. Child assessments are usually carried out in person, as direct observation is an important part of the process.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

  • Our waiting times vary, but most clients can begin the assessment process within weeks rather than months. We’ll confirm timescales when you book.

Can a parent or partner attend the assessment interview?

  • Yes. Parents, partners, or close family members are welcome to provide input and may be invited to join parts of the assessment to give their perspective.

What happens if I need to reschedule my appointment?

  • We understand that unexpected changes happen. If you need to rearrange, please contact us as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to find a new suitable time.

How should I prepare for the diagnostic interview?

  • There’s no special preparation required, but it can be helpful to reflect on your experiences or your child’s development, and gather any relevant reports or feedback from school, work, or healthcare providers.

Payment & Insurance

Do you accept health insurance?

  • Some private insurers may reimburse part of the cost of an assessment. We recommend checking directly with your provider. We can supply the necessary documentation if needed.

Can I get funding support for an assessment?

  • In certain cases, funding may be available through local education authorities, employers, or disability supports. We can advise on possible routes and provide documentation for applications.

Is there a discount if more than one family member is assessed?

  • Where more than one assessment is booked within the same household, we may be able to offer a reduced rate. Please contact us to discuss options.

Post-Diagnosis

What happens if I do not receive a diagnosis—will I still get support or guidance?

  • Yes. If a diagnosis is not given, we will still provide a full report outlining our findings, with personalised recommendations for support strategies and next steps.

Can you help me share the results with my school, GP, or employer?

  • Yes. We can provide a summary letter or additional copies of your report to share with schools, GPs, or workplaces to help you access support.

What kinds of aftercare services do you recommend following a diagnosis?

  • This depends on your needs. We may suggest therapy, coaching, educational support, or community services. We tailor our recommendations to your individual situation.

Can you provide documentation for workplace adjustments or disability supports?

  • Yes. Your report can be used to request reasonable adjustments at work or in education. We are also happy to provide supporting letters if required.

Do you offer follow-up appointments after the assessment?

  • Yes. Follow-up appointments are available if you’d like to discuss your report in more detail, or to talk through next steps and support options.

James T., age 34

I am a doctor working towards certification in Neurodiversity work and specifically Autism assessments. Sarah and Jo have a deep knowledge of Neurodivergence and share this in a way that was inclusive and interesting. Highly recommended for medical colleagues. Highly recommended for patients as their knowledge approach and ethos will deliver a quality assessment that will make the process as easy as possible.

Sarah L., parent of 9-year-old

I cannot thank Autism Services enough for their outstanding support in diagnosing my child. From the moment we first made contact, the entire process was seamless and efficient. Kelly, Sarah, and Kate were absolutely amazing throughout the entire experience. They were not only professional but also incredibly caring, ensuring my child felt completely at ease during the evaluation. Their approach was thorough and compassionate, and it made a potentially stressful situation much easier for both my child and our family. I highly recommend Autism Services to any parent looking for expert care in a welcoming environment. Truly a wonderful experience!

Diagnostics FAQ's

Why get a diagnosis for a child?

Children often wonder, "Why am I different?" Giving them an answer can bring relief, clarity, and boost wellbeing. After helping hundreds of kids, we’ve seen how transformative that understanding can be.

Is an adult diagnosis worthwhile—even if I’ve coped until now?

Curiosity matters. It’s never too late to find out why some things feel easy and others don’t. From age 7 to 60+, our clients have gained clarity and comfort after diving in. If you’re reading books, listening to podcasts, or resonating with autistic creators, you deserve your answers.

Do we diagnose Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)?

Yes! PDA falls under the autism spectrum. We factor it into our assessments at no extra cost, no add-ons needed.

Can you support highly masking women and girls?

Absolutely. We specialise in calm, gentle assessments for women over 25 who often mask or fear invalidation. We offer tailored support, respect, and care throughout. With over 100 years’ combined experience, you’re in excellent hands.

Will schools recognise the assessment?

Yes. We follow NHS/HSE-approved procedures (including Conners-4), so schools accept our reports. Children who do well in class can still be neurodivergent, and of course valid.

Can I upgrade from a single to a combined ADHD + ASD assessment later?

Definitely. You can switch at any stage—priced the same as if you’d started with the combined package.

Can I talk to someone before committing?

Of course. We offer free 15 minute consultation calls to answer any questions which you might have.

Who can get assessed?

Anyone aged 7+ who's a good fit for assessment. If you're not suitable after screening, we'll refund your deposit.

Are your assessments compliant with NICE guidelines?

Yes. Our multi-disciplinary team follows NICE, NHS, and HSE standards, led by accredited clinicians.

Will the NHS/HSE accept your diagnosis?

The vast majority of our clients have no problems having their report recognised by the NHS or HSE.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes! You can spread the cost over three interest-free payments.

Why do I need to give consent?

We follow GDPR and safeguard your privacy. Your consent lets us collect data—like medical history—to complete a thorough and accurate assessment.

What happens after booking?

Once you book, we send you questionnaires for you and relevant parties. These must be completed before your diagnostic interview.

How does the diagnostic interview work?

We'll schedule a secure video or in-person interview once your questionnaire is in. ADHD interviews last up to 2 hours; autism interviews up to 3 hours. You’ll meet with a registered clinician, and have plenty of time to ask questions.

What’s in the diagnostic report?

Your full report (up to 30 pages) will include interview findings, questionnaire results, diagnosis, and personalised aftercare recommendations.

Do we prescribe medication?

At the moment, we don’t. Medication is only discussed after diagnosis, and only if clinically recommended. We can refer you to private psychiatric support. Most clients begin with lifestyle or therapy approaches.
